A Big Thanks to Tom Richmond!

First and foremost, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Tom Richmond for his generosity in sharing his expertise and passion with us. His decades of experience in the industry and his classic approach to caricature have left an undeniable mark on each of us. As one of the most celebrated caricature artists, it's no surprised that he's had a creative eye his entire life. Since drawing caricatures in his youth, he has honed his craft through years of dedicated practice and learning from the masters. His ability to capture the essence of his subjects with a blend of exaggeration and keen observation is truly remarkable.

"Capturing one's 'Presence' goes beyond 'likeness.' Likeness is important, of course, but capturing presence is the ability to display their personality and essence. It's what makes the caricature come to life." -Tom Richmond

Tom Richmond's Workshop

Throughout the workshop, Tom guided the class through various techniques essential to caricature. We practiced shaping features, learned how to identify what he calls the "T shape," how to choose which distinctive traits to exaggerate, and even engaged in speed drawing exercises to build confidence in our line work. These exercises not only improved our technical skills but also encouraged us to trust our instincts and embrace creative risks. The ToonHeadz caricature team definitely learned a bunch from Mr. Richmond.

"We challenged ourselves with each new concept introduced, and under Tom’s expert guidance, we saw tangible improvements in our sketches."

Practice, Practice, Practice!!!

Practice is the cornerstone of mastery in caricature, as in any art form. Tom Richmond’s workshop underscored the vital role of consistent practice in honing our skills and refining our artistic vision. Through dedicated practice, we not only improve technical proficiency but also cultivate a deeper understanding of caricature’s nuances. Each sketch, each stroke, and each critique are steppingstones towards growth and proficiency. As we continue to practice diligently, we embrace the truth that every session brings new insights, challenges, and opportunities for improvement. Practice isn't just about repetition; it's about embracing the journey of continual learning and evolution as artists.

As the saying goes, "practice makes progress" and our workshop experience with Tom Richmond perfectly exemplified this. We challenged ourselves with each new concept introduced, and under Tom’s expert guidance, we saw tangible improvements in our sketches. Every critique from Tom was a valuable lesson in itself, helping us refine our techniques and develop a sharper eye for detail. AJ Jensen will tell the ToonHeadz Team that "Guidance, Consistency, Passion, and Patience are the key ingredients to be an extraordinary artist."

"We all sat at a table across from each other in pairs and Tom had his timer set to give us 5 minutes to draw our partners before we shuffled to draw another artist. What artists don't tell you is that 5 minutes feels like 2 seconds when you're drawing! It was a fantastic challenge for us to apply some of the new techniques we learned!" -Meagan Lafferty, ToonHeadz Artist

Caricature Community

Beyond the technical aspects, the workshop was a celebration of creativity and camaraderie. We laughed together, exchanged ideas, and marveled at each other’s progress. Tom fostered an environment where learning was fun and critiques were welcomed as part of the learning process.

"Tom's workshop was a worthwhile experience for the ToonHeadz. It's really important that we continue to nurture the creativity of our team and invest in their skills. We had a blast learning from Tom and enjoyed meeting so many other artists with unique styles. This is why I love caricature - it's always a journey!" - AJ Jensen, ToonHeadz Co-Owner
